Macel is now one of my all time favourite photographers, He also has my dream job of photographing all types of extreme sports.

he uses high end flash kits for almost everyshoot with a variety of different heads.

When i look at extreme sports photographers i seem to most of the time find that they have a few amazing shots and alot of very average work. Macel has amazing work throught his portfolio, in everysport every location his work is amazing.

Research Plan and Methodology - Draft

1.1 Background

This semesters work will consist of a folio around extreme sports. I have choosen this path because of my background and passion for skating. Skating is where my photography started and to be a professional photographer in the extreme sports industry would be my dream career and also a reachable one.

My main goal for this semester and for the rest of the year is to build and very solid portfolio around extreme sports and to also build my photographic gear to be able to shoot all extreme sports to the best of my potential. I already have a business running but it mostly involves corporate work and alot of catalogue work, it is good to pay the bills but im not enjoying it very much.

1.2 The Semester's Work

http://bellstage5folio.blogspot.com/

This is my journal for all my semesters work so far

1.3 Final Work

Tristan Richards - Makio Stall - Woden Skatepark

I am very happy with this shot, when i planned this shot this is exactly the way i pictured it in my head. I had such a clear picture in my head that i had tristan do the trick about 20 times till i got the right shot. Using a longer lens helped alot to get the steepness of the ness and also the light just catching the edge helped alot aswell.

Sam de Smeth - Downhill Trail - Tuggeranong Pines

I am fairly happy with this shot, i am happy with the texture and the composition but now that i have my fisheye lens it would be interesting how this shot would look with that lens. It may take away the composition of where your eye takes you. The only problem is that the photo doesn't do the trail justice, the trail is actually really steep and very rough and rocky. I don't believe the photo has captured the true craziness of this trail.

Jorden Collins - AO Topporn - Woden Skatepark

I particularly love the lighting in this shot, with only 2 speedlites i believe i got the perfect amount of light on the ramp and enough to make jorden the main focal point of the photo. My main problem with this shot is that the skater is not a sponsored skater or has any star status at all. All my other shots are of at least sponsored skaters which makes the photographs more saleable and gives the shot more credit just because of the context.

Aiden Chard - Turndown - Tuggeranong Skatepark

This shot was done in a very unusual way to how i usually shoot. I did not know aiden before this shoot. He was just down at the skatepark one day doing these huge turndowns and i just asked him if i could do a shot of that, almost like getting permission on a documentary shoot.
My main problem with this is that my tripods didnt go high enough to capture how high he was going. It is always better to light your subject from above and this was almost impossible to even get the light hitting him enough.

Brock Dunn - 5-0 -Woden Skatepark

This shot was another random guy at the skatepark that i ask to shoot. This was the first shoot i did with my fisheye. I love that you can see the texture of the ramp and still get a good perspective of the trick. My main problem is that my lighting seems to be getting very simliar in every shot but this is how almost every skate photographer shoots their subject. I may have to start a new trend in skate photography.

Luke Wainman - Studio Portrait

Luke is a BMX rider sponsored by Fit Bikes and Bake bone BMX. Luke is a really really funny guy, he is a bit of a class clown which i have tried to capture here. The whole shoot we were laughing so hard and it was really hard to do any serious shots.

The bars he is holding is the handle bars that gave him the broken collar bone and dislocated shoulder. I really wanted to tell a bit of a story with this portrait and i believe i have done it. I also added in the pin stripes in the background to tell more of the story of his personalty as it give you a sort of circus feel as he is an amazing rider and a bit of a clown.

The only thing i would change would maybe be the expression but this is just who luke is and you cant change that.

Sam De Smeth - Studio Portrait

I went into this shoot knowing i want to put this texture on the background, i really tried to match the amount of mud on him to fit well and i believe it works. The texture of the mud with the colours on his shirt and helmet came out really well, even better shooting with the blad and being able to see all the detail perfect.

It was really hard to light with the helmet giving lots of shadows, i ended up using 3 softboxes and a reflector to get in-between the gaps in the helmet to minimise shadows.

This shot was really hard to get the right lighting it was pitch black and i had lots of people waiting for me, so i was a bit rushed. I re-edited this one and put more ground in to give a bit more room in the composition.

If i was to re-shoot this i would use my fisheye lens and i would rethink think the lighting a bit more as again it is almost the same lighting set up in every shot.

Robert Seale

Robert Seale is a editorial portrait photographer based mostly around sports. I am not posting this as an inspiration because i don't seem to like his work very much. Not to say his work is bad but they seem to just be a bit boring, the technical skill is there and the personality is captured but most his work is very similar and he seems to repeat his lighting in many shots. He has some good ideas around his work but I believe his photos only stand out because of the characters and celebrities that he shoots. It is the models that make his photos what they are and not so much the photographer.

This is just my opinion, there just seems to be something missing with his technique and concepts around his photographs.

Jack English

I am really interested in doing some surfing photography i was just glancing at Jack English's website, he is an amazing surfing photographer with numerous covers and advertising shots.

jack is based in California and travels the world with all the pros finding perfect waves

He shots with all the best surfers such as kelly slater, andy irons etc.

I probably wont be doing any surfing photography for my folio this semester but i just thought i would post this for people to look at.

Clarke Little

Clarke Little is an amazing underwater/surfing photographer. His work is a bit off topic for what i am researching but it is truly amazing. He puts himself in really crazy spots inside heavy waves and shore breaks and tries to shoot these amazing barrel and liquid images. The photos speak for themselves

My New FAV Photographer

DAN VOJTECH

Dan Literally has my dream job.....

He is a photographer based on extreme sports and he is amazing at it.
Dan has countless shots in magazines and does major advertising campaigns for so many major brands. He has given me a realistic view on where exactly i would like to go with my photography.

Almost all of my photography from here will be inspired by Dan Vojtech and you probably be able to see elements of his work in my own.

Most of his shots a done using speedlites always backlit with a wide angle fisheye lens. It looks like time to invest in the canon 15mm fisheye.

These 3 shots are my inspiration for the unicyclist i am going to shoot.

It was strange when i saw this photo because only a few days ago i was thinking of doing this exact same style shot. Using speedlites with gels over to match tungsten light and then balancing to tungsten to create the blue.

These are more examples of some of my inspirations for my flat land unicycle shots.

Folio Examples

Hayden Golder

My main inspiration for all my photography but mainly for his rollerblading shots. He uses Flash for almost every single skating shot and i have studied alot of his lighting techniques and will try to apply this into my work.

E.g TWO of my recent rollerblading shots Inspired by Golder

DAN BARHAM

Is my Inspiration for downhill mountain bike shots, he makes goes to a trail and shots it like he is shooting a landscape photo but with a great element of a mountain bike rider. I am aiming to shoot a great image showing motion just like this one and also a few using speedlites just like in his other work.

Research task #1 - Part 2 - Summary of Folio

My Project Development portfolio is based around extreme sports in a commercial sense. A total of 25 photographs will be produced in the final portfolio, consisting of a range of different extreme sports. The photographs will consist of location and studio shots of the people involved in their chosen sport. The photographs are going to range from studio-based portraits to action shots of the tricks to documentary style photographs of the life of one of these athletes.

Here is the shot list julian has assigned for me and who i am shooting and where.

Produce a series of action (trick) shots of 5 different extreme sports, one of them at night. (total 5)

These shots will all be done on location using a mix of portable flash and natural light e.g. Moby kits and speedlites.

1 - Sam de Smeth / Ryan Marshall – Mountain bike – Gap Chisholm high – Trails

2 - Jorden Collins/ Tristen Richards - Rollerblading – Woden skate park

3 - Seain Ward / Ben Small– Motocross – MX Nationals – Appin NSW

4 - Aiden Carins – Longboard – Big tailslide while bombing downhill

5 - Luke Lerkerby – Unicycle – Ledge Roll

Select one of these sports and produce a documentary series of 6 photographs about the sport featuring one of these sportspeople. (total 6)

Gerad Ahrens – Brisbane QLD

Owner of Velvet Couch Clothing

Aggressive inline skater

I have chosen Gerad for the documentary series on the base of his crazy lifestyle and personality.

I am going to shoot this series in a very grungy style, shot in a very similar to Annie Leibovitz’s rolling stones photographs.

Here is a shot list I am going to try achieve but this list is very subject to change as many different photo opportunity’s may come along.

· Environmental portrait

· Nightlife shot

· Work shot

· Action shot

· 2x Lifestyle shots

Select one person from each of the chosen sports for a magazine front page portrait. (total 5)

All of these shots will be done in studio using the Hasselblads.

I am going to light these according to the athletes personality.

e.g. If the athlete is a very happy fun clean person I will light it very cleanly and use the cyclorama. If the athlete has a very crazy personalty I will light it in with very rembrant style

1- Motocross – Seain Ward – Ben Small

2 - Rollerblading – Shane Onus – Tristan Richards

3 - Mountain Bike – Sam De Smeth

4 - BMX – Luke Wayman

5 - Luke Leckerby – Unicycle

Produce 2 composite photographs showing the steps in a trick or action sequence, you choose the sport and the type of shot. (total 2)

The Sequence (composite) photographs are very subject to change as it will depend on the trick the athletes are willing to do to which will suit best for a sequence shot.

Shane Onus – Yarralumba - gap to rail

Freestyle Motocross – Event Sequence

Produce a series of 7 sports shots of your choosing. (total 7)

For this series of photographs I am going to aim to get lifestyle photographs to accompany the action and portraits shots to give a the viewers a sense of the athletes personality’s.

Research task #1 - Back to Basics

So its the 3rd and final year of the course, im not sure what to expect but im sure its going to be alot of fun and alot of hard work.

My goals for this semester is basically to improve my skills in extreme sports photography and build a very solid portfolio based around many different extreme sports. This is the direction I have chosen to take my photography style, i have tried many different styles of photography from products to fashion. I have enjoyed tried all these different areas but i never felt like it was something I would love to do for a career.

So now i have decided to go back to where photography began for me, Extreme Sports....

I first found myself holding a camera taking photos of me and my mates skating, back then with no dreams of being a photographer but only a pro skater as that is every skaters dream.

I started shooting this semesters folio about 1 week ago and am having the most fun with my photography since i started the course. This is the style of photography i can see myself shooting for a career, i still love shooting different things such a products people and food but these also can accommodate the extreme sports photos.

I started the course to shoot other things than skating and to learn new techniques, i found myself very obliged to not shoot skating and find what i would like to shoot for a living but after 2 years i have found I really only wanted to shoot extreme sports.

At the end of 3rd year I am going to take a well deserved gap year and travel. I want to shoot as much international extreme sports overseas and come back with the best possible portfolio i can have. On my journey i want to sell my shots to magazines and make money by freelancing. My main goal within this type of photography would be to have a contract with a company such as Saloman and travel the world shooting assigned jobs.
